Students are challenged to think as biomedical engineers and brainstorm ways to administer medication to a patient who is unable to swallow. They learn about the advantages and disadvantages of current drug delivery methods—oral, injection, topical, inhalation and suppository—and pharmaceutical design considerations, including toxicity, efficacy, size, solubility/bioavailability and drug release duration. They apply their prior knowledge about human anatomy, the circulatory system, polymers, crystals and stoichiometry to real-world biomedical applications. A Microsoft® PowerPoint® presentation and worksheets are provided. This lesson prepares students for the associated activity in which they create and test large-size drug encapsulation prototypes to provide the desired delayed release and duration timing.

Rating
0.0 stars

Health Informatics is an emerging field that fosters the acquisition, storage, retrieval and use of information within health care. As information technology advancements become more integral to health care, the demand for health care professionals who can employ and utilize health data is increasing. Health Informatics plays a critical role in enhancing the quality of consumer care, reducing health care costs and providing healthcare access in rural areas. Health Informatics specialty areas include electronic health records, health care insurance billing, telemedicine, and health care delivery systems, including laboratory and public health. The standards for the Health Informatics pathway and related courses apply to occupations and functions in health information systems and the delivery of healthcare. The standards specify the knowledge and skills common to occupations in this pathway. Students participating in a solid Health Informatics program, can expect to understand patient privacy laws, health care legal and policy issues, front and back office data systems, health information insurance billing, troubleshooting and problem solving, and terminology. Additionally, students will learn different clinical applications in medicine, nursing, pharmacology, laboratory, and public health.

A Historical Ecology of Slavery in the Danish West Indies
Unrestricted Use

Rating
0.0 stars

A Historical Ecology of Slavery in the Danish WThis lecture by Justin Dunnavant at UC Santa Cruz focuses on the intersection of historical ecology and slavery in the Danish West Indies. He delves into various aspects, including the impact of the slave trade globally, archaeological methods for studying slave shipwrecks, and the ongoing relevance of archaeology in contemporary communities.

The key takeaway from this lecture is a deeper understanding of how the slave trade influenced global ecosystems and societies, particularly through the lens of historical ecology. Dunnavant emphasizes the critical role of archaeology in uncovering the material histories of enslaved peoples and how these insights can guide contemporary cultural and environmental preservation.

Pre-Watch Preparation
Contextual Background: Provide students with a background on the Danish West Indies, the transatlantic slave trade, and basic principles of archaeology and ecology. This could be in the form of a short reading assignment or a classroom lecture.
Key Vocabulary: Introduce key terms and concepts that will appear in the video, such as "historical ecology," "maritime archaeology," and "sustainable archaeology," to ensure students are not bogged down by unfamiliar terminology.

Justin Dunnavant begins the lecture by outlining his research focus on the historical ecology of slavery in the Danish West Indies, emphasizing the integration of archaeological methods with ecological awareness.

He introduces the significance of the transatlantic slave trade in shaping the economic and cultural landscapes of the Virgin Islands, with particular attention to the archaeological evidence from shipwrecks.

Dunnavant discusses his work at the Estate Little Princess, a former Danish plantation on St. Croix, describing the artifacts found and their cultural implications.

The lecture highlights the environmental impacts of slavery, such as deforestation and landscape modification, which were integral to the plantation economy.

The role of community involvement in archaeological practice is underscored, promoting an inclusive approach to studying and preserving history.

Dunnavant presents a case for sustainable archaeology that respects both cultural heritage and the natural environment, aiming to mitigate the impacts of archaeological activities.

The talk concludes with a discussion on the importance of continued research and education to further explore the complex legacies of slavery in the Caribbean.

This module consists of a PowerPoint presentation, lab sheet, and syllabi discussing HEVs' braking and steering systems. These materials are derived from three courses offered at Lewis and Clark Community College on automotive alignment, braking, and steering systems and were developed through a seed grant from the CAAT. The presentation discusses the circuitry and operations for HEV braking and steering systems, variations from traditional braking and steering power assist, and how to service brake pads on a Ford Escape Hybrid. The lab sheet should familiarize students with the variations and similarities between hybrid and conventional systems when servicing a HEV's brake pads such as placing the vehicle in "Pad Service Mode." The provided syllabi includes highlighted sections where these HEV technologies were incorporated into alignment, brakes, and suspension courses at Lewis and Clark Community College.

This collection of instructional resources is intended to support teaching the “Hydraulics and Electrical Control of Hydraulic Systems” class using the flipped classroom format where lecture content is placed online and all class time is re-purposed into a hands on workshops or lab activities. Lectures are available at all times and can be paused, rewound, and reviewed to support the learning process. Additionally, these resources can be used to facilitate supplementary or remedial instruction.

Success in this course depends upon the active participation and discipline of the student. Watch the assigned lectures in the sequence dictated by your instructor and use the associated study guides to assist in comprehension of the material. Pause the lecture when asked to do so and attempt the example problems. If you struggle with the example problem, the online lecture will guide you to the correct solution.

These resources are divided into 6 units where each unit might take a 1-2 weeks to assimilate, review, and conduct associated lab activities. The complete playlist is arranged in the intended sequence, however, a particular class may choose to place more or less emphasis on a particular topic given that class’s intended focus.

All of the recorded lectures are collected in a YouTube playlist.

InterMountain CTE Consortium Handbook.pdf

Educational consortiums pool their resources and work together to achieve common objectives. These consortiums have to carefully plan and communicate to ensure that all members benefit through the shared work. For example, smaller members may have access to additional resources but often volunteer to innovate and pilot projects that contribute to the shared knowledge base. It is this delicate balance of preserving member parity that prepares a well-functioning consortium to also keep equitable practices at the center of their work, for the students we ultimately serve as well as their represented districts and other partners. This handbook is the result of over four decades of leadership by CTE Directors representing districts in eastern Oregon and the facilitation of four Regional Coordinators housed by the InterMountain Education Service District. Although much of the operational information is specific to this region and career and technical education, we share it here as one example of how a group of people representing different communities of all sizes and demographics can come together through strategic planning to identify who is being underserved, in what ways, and how regional partners can work together to serve each and every student.
