Resources shoud be:

1. Relevant/Fact Based: The content should be up-to-date.Information should also be updated by the creator of said resource if necessary.

2. Accessible: All users should be able to access the regardless of device (within reason), disabillity, language barrier, etc.

3. Standard Based/Clear Objective: The user should be able to connect the resource to a specific standard and/or objective by looking at the title.

4. Possess Clarity: Anything in print should be free of typographical and grammatical errors, as well as in font size/style that is easily read. Videos' sound and picture quality must be good enough so that all users can understand what is being viewed.

5. Be Unbiased: The resource should not discriminate against any group.

As it pertains to my resource evaluation criteria, I would love if the resources are:

  • Truthful/Accurate
  • Accessible
  • Adaptable
  • Appropriate
  • Contains Multicultural Representation
  • Comprehensible
  • Contains Cultural Relevance

I would want it to contain a rubric that is easy to follow for all educators. When it comes to adaptability, would we be able to modify or make changes to fit our classroom? Ensuring that the resource can also align with the standards used would also be a great addition.

I personally really liked the rubrics in Achieve OER Rubrics. Each rubric had an evaluation criteria that I would look for in a resource:

  • Rubric I. Alignment to Standards
  • Rubric II. Quality of Explanation of the Subject Matter
  • Rubric III. Utility of Materials Designed to Support Teaching (All levels/Differentiated)
  • Rubric IV. Quality of Assessment (Formative and Summative)
  • Rubric V. Quality of Technological Interactivity
  • Rubric VI. Quality of Instructional and Practice Exercises
  • Rubric VII. Opportunities for Deeper Learning
  • Rubric VIII. Assurance of Accessibility

My ideal resource rubric would contain categories from the Achieve Rubric and the Textbook Review Criteria, with all categories explained explicitly.  Resources would:

  • Align to Standards
  • Use age-appropriate terminology, subject matters and explanations
  • Contain materials to support holistic teaching
  • Use quality assessments
  • Include quality technology (pictures, videos etc.)
  • Use quality adaptable instructional and practice activities
  • Provide opportunities for deeper learning
  • Be accessible
  • Contain no grammatical errors.
  • Present credible and objective material (resources should be free of hidden agendas and personal biases.)

I agree with my coworkers. It must be relevant, standard-based, accessible to all students (ELs & SPEDs, clear, unbiased, and culturally relevant to the diverse groups. I would like to add it helps when the rubric is divided into sections. The sections could be

  1. Curriculum and content
  2.  instructional features
  3.  supports for teachers and for students
  4.  assessments
  5. technology

I do think that the rating scale should be clear and easy to follow.
