Invasion sports involve an offensive team working to maintain possession of an object while attacking (or invading) a defensive team’s goal or target area. Development of specific skills and skill combinations that involve passing, receiving, shooting, and defending are targeted learning outcomes. Classic invasion sports include soccer, basketball, football, hockey, ultimate, and rugby. This module provides lead-up activities aimed at developing the motor skills, movement patters, and strategic knowledge commonly associated with invasion sports.

This module includes activities that use the GenMove MultiGoal. This piece of equipment is recommended because it is versatile and provides for developmental adaptions that enhance student learning. However, it’s important to remember that any activity can be modified to work with equipment that you have on hand.

It would be very interesting to know what Dr. James Naismith would think about the evolution of a game that he invented in December of 1891. Although his vision for the game probably didn’t include the NBA, slam dunk contests, or 3-point shoot-outs, we believe he would be happy to know that millions of students around the world use basketball as a way to stay active year-round while enjoying the benefits of physical activity with friends.

In 2019, 128 years after Dr. Naismith’s first game, the OPEN Basketball Nation celebrates the roots of the game by providing physical educators and youth coaches the tools to teach basketball as a lifelong activity that promotes the very best in humanity. This Middle School Basketball module is just one part of the OPEN Basketball Nation movement. For more information and resources, visit www.openphysed.org/basketballnation

This module builds upon the learning and enjoyment that students experienced in the OPEN dance modules for grades K-2 and 3-5. The dances and activities build in complexity and ask students to use social and emotional strategies to create a positive learning environment. In order to help your students progress through this module, keep the environment fun and silly, while also maintaining high expectations for learning.

Learning dance is ultimately a journey of self-expression. Perfecting every step is not what is important. Personal enjoyment, social engagement, and appreciation for all movement forms will ultimately keep dance as an important element of an individual’s physical literacy journey. Teach and reinforce skills and concepts while keeping the magic of movement alive.
