Andragogy is the study of how adults learn and is a theory developed by Malcolm Knowles based on a variety of research centered on adult development, needs, and learning styles. This document includes a description of Knowles’ five underlying assumptions, along with specific applications of these five components expanded upon by other researchers and theorists. More recent theories of adult learning have called these assumptions into question, proposing that there may be degrees or certain conditions under which they apply or that self-direction, for instance, may be desirable but not always the reality of adult learners. Nevertheless, these assumptions continue to serve widely as a general guide for thinking about adult learners.

This film features an interdisciplinary project in which a student created the life history—fictional, but realistic—of a person—in this case, a young Deaf girl. In addition to addressing Common Core writing standards, the project explored the College and Career Readiness Habit, “They come to understand other perspectives and cultures.” The project provided a deep, transformational, real-world immersion into Deaf culture. The film itself is ASL-interpreted through picture-within-picture technology.

EL Education professional development asks teachers and adVISAnistrators to be active learners and to experience fully what it means to read, write, assess, problem solve and learn the "EL way." This means that facilitator’s model effective instructional practices, and participants engage in the social construction of meaning by collaborating in small and large groups. Watch examples of this in action from coast to coast at Conway Elementary School in Escondido, CA and Washington Heights Expeditionary Learning School (WHEELS) in New York, NY. Fourth grade "Super Stewards" at Conway repopulate trout in their local watershed as part of their Better World Project, so "the life cycle will keep on going." Seniors at WHEELS engage in a Youth Participatory Action project, proclaiming that education can "shift the whole Universe."
