Google Docs is a great word processor, but is much more than just that. Although we can certainly use it to type up a report, take notes, or write a story, we can also get creative with the features and functions built into the program to make some fun learning activities. Recently I did a video training webinar where I took a look at four creative ways to use regular Google Docs features in new fun ways to practice and develop literacy skills. Despite intense political opposition to the acquisition of the islands, the U.S. Senate ratified the treaty. The political impact of anti-imperialist arguments, the difficult experience of suppressing native Filipino resistance, and the lack of attractive opportunities for further territorial expansion, all effectively stalled the American imperialist/expansionist movement.

Follow an Iraqi refugee and learn how his experience in an inclusive charter school has helped his English language skills, in this video from NOVA: School of the Future. In 2013, high schooler Murtada Mahmood arrived in Massachusetts from Iraq speaking only broken English. Because he was placed in a class for English learners (ELs) and separated from the school’s student body, his language skills suffered. After switching to KIPP Academy in Lynn, where ELs are included in regular classes, Mahmood’s self-image improved. As his English skills developed, he raised his expectations for what he could accomplish. This resource is part of the NOVA: School of the Future Collection.
