This guidance document helps teachers understand the why, as well as the concrete what and how, of the K-2 Labs: what the five labs are, how each lab supports student learning, how the Labs hour is structured, how Labs reinforce and extend work from the module lessons, what work students do during Labs, how unfold over the course of an entire module in order to build students' independence, what a day in Labs looks like, and Frequently Asked Questions.

For use with Grade K and Grade 1 of the K-2 Reading Foundations Skills Block. Differentiation Packs can be used as a resource for planning differentiated small group instruction for students whose microphase aligns with work from a different grade level. This resource includes a comprehensive word list, key cycle information and texts for each grade level cycle, suggested instructional practices, poems, decodable readers, and handwriting sheets.

Learning Letters is a collection of all of the K-2 Reading Foundations Skills Block curricular materials related to learning about letter names, sounds, and formation. The contents include the research behind EL Education's approach to teaching letters, Letter Stories (engaging read-alouds, one for each letter of the alphabet and consonant digraph ("ch", "sh", and"th"), upper- and lowercase Keyword Cards (a colorful picture of the animal or object associated with each letter, and Handwriting Sheets (letter formation and handwriting practice sheets).

A single comprehensive resource that includes many of the documents needed to understand the design and to effectively implement the K-2 Reading Foundations Skills Block, including an assessment overview, assessment conversion chart, Benchmark Assessments (teacher and student materials), Activity Bank, information on independent and small group work, syllabification guidance, handwriting guidance, and a glossary.

Introduction to EL Education Language Arts Curriculum. It explains the structure of our program and lays out the principles behind our design. It includes our approach to addressing ELA standards, and specifics about the key features of our comprehensive literacy curriculum as well as a description of the 3-5 Life Science Modules.

The K-5 Recommended Texts & Other Resources List contains books and other resources that have been selected by our experts to support research or read-alouds for each module.

This critical document lists all trade books that schools and districts must purchase to implement the EL Education K-5 Language Arts Curriculum and includes the specific texts and quantities (e.g., one per classroom, six per classroom, one per student) required.

The curriculum map is the single best source to understand the year's work in the module lessons for each grade level: a detailed view of the scope and sequence of the modules showing module titles, topics, targets, and standards explicitly taught and formally assessed in each module.

In this unit, students explore the beauties of winter. In the first part of the unit, students learn about how snow forms and the different types of snow that fall in the winter. In the second part of the unit, students explore how animals survive in the winter and the ways in which animals meet their basic needs, even when the ground is covered with ice and snow. In the last part of the unit, students read a variety of Jan Brett texts and use what they have learned about snow and animals to make inferences about what is happening with the different winter animals in the text. By the end of the unit, students should have a strong grasp of what makes winter unique and the different ways animals survive in the winter. Due to the timing of this unit, it is our hope that students will have plenty of opportunities to interact with the vocabulary and content in the natural world around them.

In this culminating unit, students learn about how to save the earth by reducing, reusing, and recycling. Over the course of the year, students studied the different seasons, learned about how animals and plants change and survive in different seasons, and explored some of the life cycles found in nature. Now, in this unit, students think about what they can do to make sure human waste does not hurt the environment. In the first part of the unit, students learn about waste, and why waste is a problem, especially plastic waste. Students then learn about options for limiting waste, including recycling, reducing, and reusing resources. In the second half of the unit, students read stories about different people from around the world who have found ways to reduce, reuse, and recycle waste. Using what they have learned in the unit, students will then make a plan for what they can do to create a healthy community and environment.

Grade level rubrics for three types of writing: opinion/argument, informative/explanatory, and narrative. EL Education created these K-5 rubrics based on an analysis of the grade-level demands, rubrics used by common assessment platforms, and EL Education's own professional expertise (including attention to the Writing for Understanding framework).

EL Education's Grades 3–8 ELA Curriculum has been designed by teachers for teachers to meet the needs and demands of the Common Core State Standards: to address and bring to life the shifts in teaching and learning required by these higher academic standards. To prepare students for college and the workplace, where they will be expected to read a high volume of complex informational text and write informational text, the shifts highlight the need for students to learn and practice these skills early on. This curriculum has been designed to make this learning process engaging with compelling topics, texts, and tasks.

The Story Map interactive is designed to assist students in prewriting and postreading activities by focusing on the key elements of character, setting, conflict, and resolution.

The Sheltered Instruction Observation Protocol (SIOP) was developed by Jana Echevarria, Mary Ellen Vogt, and Deborah J. Short. The SIOP lesson plan makes content material more comprehensible to English Language Learners. This lesson clearly defines content objectives and language objectives.
