Through this earth science curricular unit, student teams are presented with the scenario that an asteroid will impact the Earth. In response, their challenge is to design the location and size of underground caverns to shelter the people from an uninhabitable Earth for one year. Driven by this adventure scenario, student teams 1) explore general and geological maps of their fictional state called Alabraska, 2) determine the area of their classroom to help determine the necessary cavern size, 3) learn about map scales, 4) test rocks, 5) identify important and not-so-important rock properties for underground caverns, and 6) choose a final location and size.

Join me for a hands-on ride through the fundamentals of electronics and acoustics and the process of loudspeaker design and construction. We will learn about the engineering and art involved throughout music/movie recording and playback, the design and application of everything from microphones to DACs, amplifiers, and speakers. With the aid of computer assisted audio measuring equipment at the MIT Edgerton Center, we will analyze the frequency response and distortion of speaker drivers, and understand their effect on what we hear. Then we design our own speakersÄdriver selection, crossover networks, and enclosure designÄand build them in class!

Automated, Connected and Intelligent Vehicles

The goal of the course is to introduce students to the various technologies and systems used to implement Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS).

These systems have the overall impact of automating various driving functions and create a safer driving experience for the passengers.

The basics of automotive electronics, fundamentals of electronic control systems, and the evolution of these systems will be introduced. The necessary components needed to implement ADAS include advanced location and vehicle surroundings sensors, wireless technology, and the networking and processing of data are presented.

The details of various ADAS are covered including the most recent innovations: lane keeping, collision avoidance, automatic emergency braking, and autonomous vehicles. Other course topics include: sensor data fusion, advanced display and driver warning technology, impaired/medical emergency driver sensor technology, vehicle prognostics, and system troubleshooting.

The course lectures, handouts, homework assignments, lab exercises and projects, and exams are designed to train community college students that are in automotive advanced certificate and/or associate degree programs. The materials may also be adapted for use in the training of incumbent workers.

The basics of cybersecurity threat models, high risk attack areas of vehicles, classes of attacks, and protecting vehicles from attacks are introduced. Standards and protocols related to automotive cybersecurity will be covered. Cybersecurity methods and penetration testing for vehicles will also be presented. Attacking connected vehicles will be discussed by reviewing vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) and vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I) communications and wireless access protocols, such as IEEE 1609. "A lot of people thought we were an overnight sensation," says The Beatles' Paul McCartney in The Beatles: Eight Days a Week “The Touring Years," "but they were wrong." Indeed, though to many fans The Beatles seem to have been a big bang, bursting from Liverpudlian obscurity to international stardom with their 1963 debut album Please Please Me, quite the opposite is true. Between 1960-63, The Beatles worked. They were, after all, young men from the working classes of Liverpool, a city still recovering from World War II. They worked to earn money for basic necessities, playing pub sets both day and night and performing lengthy residencies in Hamburg, Germany, one of which included a stretch of 104 consecutive shows. They worked on repertoire, learning dozens of "cover" songs spanning several genres. They worked on their group sound, playing several sets a night and fine tuning the skills that helped them "hold" audiences at the dance floor, even those who may not have come specifically to see them.

Biotechnology is a large scientific field that uses research tools from chemistry and biology to study or solve problems, including human disease. Biotechnologies may be used to study the genetic material of viruses and bacteria to determine whether a disease is caused by particular disease-producing agents. Its techniques are also used to understand how genetic factors contribute to human disease. The information gathered in research can be used to develop diagnostic tests that enable speedy detection and identification of a disease so that an appropriate treatment can be developed. It can also help doctors screen their patients' genomes (all of an organism's genes) for existing diseases or a predisposition for diseases such as cancer.The standards for the Biotechnology Research and Development Pathway and related courses apply to occupations and functions in biotechnology research and development that apply primarily to human health. The standards specify the knowledge and skills common to occupations in this pathway. Students participating in a strong, industy-driven Biotechnology program can expect to conduct research using bioinformatics theory and methods in areas such as pharmaceuticals, medical technology, biotechnology, computational biology, proteomics, computer information science, biology and medical informatics. Additionally, students may use extended technologies to design databases and develop algorithms for processing and analyzing genomic information, or other biological information pertinent to this field.
