From CK-12, U.S. History Sourcebook - Advanced covers U.S. history from Colonial America through World War I. This book provides high school U.S. History teachers and students with sets of primary and secondary sources about important topics. Some teachers will use it as a supplement to a traditional textbook. For those looking to leave the textbook behind entirely, it will provide a course with basic structure and continuity, and will reduce the burden of finding new primary sources for each class meeting. However, it is not yet comprehensive enough to meet the coverage requirements of, for example, an Advanced Placement test.

VI Freedom Week- St. John Fortsberg Virtual Presentation with Kurt Marsh of St. Janco

Denmark Vesey worked as a carpenter and was formerly an enslaved person. Vesey was born in the Danish West Indies, which are now known as the Virgin Islands of the United States. Vesey allegedly plotted an enslaved uprising in Charleston, South Carolina, in 1822 to coincide with Bastille Day. Vesey patterned his movement after Haiti's successful 1791 slave revolt.

Friendship Day between the Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico is a public holiday observed in the United States Virgin Islands on the second Monday of October. The holiday was established in 1964 by Governor Paiewonsky to recognize Puerto Ricans who live in the Virgin Islands or have made significant contributions to the territory.
The date was chosen to coincide with Columbus Day, as it was seen as "an ideal day for recognizing Americans' solidarity with the Caribbean.

The day was established by Act 8257, which was signed into law by Gov. Albert Bryan Jr. in January. It commemorates the adoption of the Virgin Islands flag on May 17, 1921.

 It was determined in 1847 that future children born to enslaved laborers would be free, and that slavery would be abolished totally in 1859. Instead of agreeing to the deal, the enslaved began mobilizing, and on July 3rd, 1848, an estimated 8,000 enslaved individuals demanded their freedom 1848, an estimated 8,000 enslaved individuals demanded their freedom in Frederiksted in front of Fort Frederik

Designed by Aliya Perkins, this WebQuest was created to teach high school students some of the aspects of the creative arts of the Virgin Islands.

Plantation agriculture, and slave labor, united the British colonies in the West Indies and the southern part of the eastern seaboard. In this video, Kim discusses the sugar islands of the Caribbean and how their reliance on enslaved Africans for labor defined plantation society throughout the British colonies.

"This semester, we will read writing about travel and place from Columbus's Diario through the present. Travel writing has some special features that will shape both the content and the work for this subject: reflecting the point of view, narrative choices, and style of individuals, it also responds to the pressures of a real world only marginally under their control. Whether the traveler is a curious tourist, the leader of a national expedition, or a starving, half-naked survivor, the encounter with place shapes what travel writing can be. Accordingly, we will pay attention not only to narrative texts but to maps, objects, archives, and facts of various kinds. Our materials are organized around three regions: North America, Africa and the Atlantic world, the Arctic and Antarctic. The historical scope of these readings will allow us to know something not only about the experiences and writing strategies of individual travelers, but about the progressive integration of these regions into global economic, political, and knowledge systems. Whether we are looking at the production of an Inuit film for global audiences, or the mapping of a route across the North American continent by water, these materials do more than simply record or narrate experiences and territories: they also participate in shaping the world and what it means to us. Few areas in our world today remain untouched by the influence of the new technology and its impact on education. Teachers must now devise new strategies for teaching and the exchange of information in classrooms with a view to improving Literacy and the comprehension of English among speakers of English-based creoles.

We advocate research and experimentation with digital tools as one of the ways of involving young teachers in possible projects that will challenge their own Literacy as well as that in the wider society.

THIS COLLECTION of articles was sourced on the Connexions server with precisely this aim in mind. The first article on the history of Literacy and the evolution of the Connexions (OER) model gives us the signal that the proliferation of digital tools and their use in education will radically alter the face of teaching and learning in the coming decades. The second article explores the topic of the changing learning styles of digital learners. We are in for an educational adventure that has implications for the way Literacy can grow and be a source of enjoyment among dialect speakers of English. These articles form a framework for an exploration of how digital tools can be used to enhance Literacy on our campus.

The COLLECTION will be used for a discussion of the issues in workshops and as supplemental reading in Literacy related courses. It has evolved out of an initial exploration of the topic of technology and Literacy. Our hopes that it will attract attention and feedback from others in the field of Literacy and the new technology.
