Learn about the United States' reasons for entering World War I. Created by Sal Khan.
In 1853, the City of New York set aside hundreds of acres of swampland in the middle of Manhattan, with the idea that this uninhabitable space could serve a practical, public purpose. Today, we know that area as Central Park, one of the most widely visited and celebrated public spaces in the country. The then-unknown park designer who won the bid to design Central Park, Frederick Law Olmsted, would go on to inspire and revolutionize urban park design in the United States. The work of Olmsted and other early parks pioneers, building on older concepts like town squares, would spur the growth of urban parks large and small nationwide. Benefiting from new innovations in design, these parks serve as community centers and defining features of cities and towns across the country. Urban parks have continually adapted to meet the needs of the publics they serve, evolving, for example, from places to simply enjoy nature into recreation sites that offer activities and equipment. More than just sites for leisure, they also play a broader role in supporting community engagement by providing places for civic participation, enhancing quality of life and property values, and offering safe, healthy, and convenient recreation options. This exhibition was created as part of the DPLAs Public Library Partnerships Project by collaborators from the Minnesota Digital Library. Exhibition Coordinator: Carla Urban.
In this lesson, students will examine a preselected set of newspaper articles drawn from the "Chronicling America" website. They will determine the right each article illustrates and the responsibility that comes with that right.
Looking to help students practice "reading" images for a variety of contextual meanings while engaging in content area study? This lesson uses images of the Boston Massacre to deepen students' comprehension of both the event and the effects of propaganda. Students begin by completing an anticipation guide to introduce them to Boston Massacre, propaganda, and British/colonial reactions to the massacre. They then complete an image analysis to make inferences about various images of the massacre. The culminating activity-a presentation about students' observations and inferences-demonstrates students' knowledge of the Boston Massacre and propaganda in a variety of ways. This lesson benefits English-language learners (ELLs) and struggling readers because it involves viewing images, participating in discussions, working with peers, and listening to a read-aloud that reinforces the lesson content and vocabulary.

This document provides a list of instructional resources aligned to content standards and assessments.
The resources housed here include the Virgin Islands Cultural Standards with the companion Kallaloo Framework to be utilized for lesson planning.
The Virgin Islands Cultural Standards and companion Kallaloo Framework are grounded in the history, language, traditions, and environment of the Virgin Islands so that teachers can create opportunities to link instruction to the everyday lives of students. The framework provides students with a strong sense of self-identity and charges students to understand the cultures of others. The rationale is that Virgin Islands students should be empathetic toward other cultures as well as be global citizens yet stand firm within their own Virgin Islands identity. Further, the Kallaloo Framework presents educators with the necessary tools to cultivate opportunities for students to play an active role in positively shaping Virgin Islands culture. The Framework provides an opportunity for educators to incorporate the Virgin Islands Cultural Standards, and, by extension, Virgin Islands History, in every classroom, in every subject area, in every school, every day.
In August 2022, this document was reviewed and approved for sharing with stakeholders by the Board of Education. This July 31, 2023 document is a revised, updated version of the document. Social Studies teachers in particular, and other content area teachers and encourage to utilize the standards in their instructional.

Queen Victoria of England reigned over a vast British empire from 1837 until her death in 1901. During her rule, England rapidly transformed into a modern, technologically-based economy exercising global military and cultural power, roiling with class and racial conflict. Victorianism extended far beyond the boundaries of Britain and informed international movements of the same period, including in the United States.

In this design challenge, students learn about the Vikings from an engineering point-of-view. While investigating the history and anatomy of Viking ships, they learn how engineering solutions are shaped by the surrounding environment and availability of resources. Students apply this knowledge to design, build and test their own model Viking ships.
The St. John Heritage Collective hosts a panel discussion regarding the importance of Virgin Islands Creole.
Friendship Day between the Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico is a public holiday observed in the United States Virgin Islands on the second Monday of October. The holiday was established in 1964 by Governor Paiewonsky to recognize Puerto Ricans who live in the Virgin Islands or have made significant contributions to the territory.
The date was chosen to coincide with Columbus Day, as it was seen as "an ideal day for recognizing Americans' solidarity with the Caribbean.
The day was established by Act 8257, which was signed into law by Gov. Albert Bryan Jr. in January. It commemorates the adoption of the Virgin Islands flag on May 17, 1921.
The Virgin Islands State Literacy Plan (VISLP) provides education leaders with research-supported principles, guidelines, and recommendations for implementing best first practices in Tier 1 for effective literacy teaching and learning. The plan also assists education leaders to consider how best to integrate the Kallaloo Cultural Framework into school-based literacy practices to ensure students enrolled in VIDE places of education are prepared for further education, careers, and lifelong learning. The principles, practices, and assessment information are intended to assist leaders in ensuring they are able to support school leaders to develop school-based processes and practices for literacy teaching and learning that are research-informed and supported. The Roadmaps shared here align to the Virgin Islands Department of Education's State Literacy Plan. With a focus on literacy as a shared responsibilty, these customized roadmaps offer strategies for integrating literacy in Mathematics, Science, History, the Arts, and the Health & Phyiscal Education classrooms.
