Uniporters, symporters, and antiporters are proteins that are used in ƒ??transportƒ?? of substances across a cell membrane. Uniporters are involved in facilitated diffusion and work by binding to one molecule of substrate at a time to move it along its concentration gradient. Symporters and antiporters are involved in active transport. Antiporters transport molecules in opposite directions, while symporters transport molecules in the same direction.

it would be ideal if students already have learned that DNA is the genetic material, and that DNA is made up of As, Ts, Gs, and Cs. It also would help if students already know that each human has two versions of every piece of DNA in their genome, one from mom and one from dad. The lesson will take about one class period, with roughly 30 minutes of footage and 30 minutes of activities.

Using Microcontrollers to Model Homeostasis

Students learn about homeostasis and create models by constructing simple feedback systems using Arduino boards, temperature sensors, LEDs and Arduino code. Starting with pre-written code, students instruct LEDs to activate in response to the sensor detecting a certain temperature range. They determine appropriate temperature ranges and alter the code accordingly. When the temperature range is exceeded, a fan is engaged in order to achieve a cooling effect. In this way, the principle of homeostasis is demonstrated. To conclude, students write summary paragraphs relating their models to biological homeostasis.

The resources housed here include the Virgin Islands Cultural Standards with the companion Kallaloo Framework to be utilized for lesson planning.

The Virgin Islands Cultural Standards and companion Kallaloo Framework are grounded in the history, language, traditions, and environment of the Virgin Islands so that teachers can create opportunities to link instruction to the everyday lives of students. The framework provides students with a strong sense of self-identity and charges students to understand the cultures of others. The rationale is that Virgin Islands students should be empathetic toward other cultures as well as be global citizens yet stand firm within their own Virgin Islands identity. Further, the Kallaloo Framework presents educators with the necessary tools to cultivate opportunities for students to play an active role in positively shaping Virgin Islands culture. The Framework provides an opportunity for educators to incorporate the Virgin Islands Cultural Standards, and, by extension, Virgin Islands History, in every classroom, in every subject area, in every school, every day.

For this maker challenge, students become biomedical engineers who design, create, and test a medical device that measures a patient’s pulse using a microcontroller, LED, and light sensor. Students use data collected from the device they build to determine how to best visualize the results, so that a doctor can view the patient’s pulse on the computer screen. During the challenge, students learn about basic coding, the capabilities of microcontrollers, how sensors gather data, how the human circulatory system works, and how to plot real data. Finally, students are challenged to make their systems portable so that they create wearable health technology. This is a great project for a high school senior design team project.

Students apply everything they have learned over the course of the associated lessons about waves, light properties, the electromagnetic spectrum, and the structure of the eye, by designing devices that can aid color blind people in distinguishing colors. Students learn about the engineering design process and develop three possible solutions to the engineering design challenge outlined in lesson 1 of this unit. They create posters to display their three design ideas and the comparisons used to select the best design. Then, students create brochures for their final design ideas, and "sell" the ideas to their "client." Through this activity, students complete the legacy cycle by "going public" with the creation of their informative posters and brochures that explain their designs, as well as color blindness and how people see color, in "client" presentations.

In this Adaptation Name Game, students sitting or standing in a circle play a version of tag, with one person in the center. When a person in the circle says another person’s name, the person in the center of the circle tries to touch the person whose name was said, before they can say someone else’s name. Later, students pause to brainstorm strategies to improve their performance, then play some more. Students learn that this was a representation of how certain structures and behaviors help organisms survive in their habitat, and that these are adaptations that species inherit over time. This game helps students learn each other’s names, while “lightly” introducing them to what adaptations are. Note: This activity is only an introduction; to gain any meaningful understanding of the topic, students will need more adaptation-focused activities, such as Adaptations Intro-Live!, Structures & Behaviors, and Related & Different, which engage students more deeply in understanding the concept through interactions with real organisms.
